Solutions ยท Biometric database migration
Audit and conversion of biometric databases between vendors and standards, for national ID, voter, health and banking registers that should not be held hostage by one supplier.
What do you actually own after ten years with one biometric vendor? Often a database whose templates only that vendor's matcher can read, images in a variant of a standard that other systems reject, and personal data hidden inside the files. When the contract ends, the hardware is outdated or the regulator changes the format, all of this has to move, and nobody can be lost on the way.
We inventory what is really stored: formats and their vendor variants, image quality, templates that cannot be moved, duplicates and personal data inside biometric files. You get a report before any decision about the new vendor.
Fingerprint and iris records converted between vendor variants of ISO/IEC 19794, ANSI/NIST-ITL, ANSI 378 and ISO card formats, with templates re-extracted from images where proprietary templates cannot be reused.
A sample is matched on the old and the new system, and differences are explained before the new system goes live. Missing identities are found before cutover, not after.
Biographic data embedded in biometric files is extracted or removed, so the converted database stores only what it should. This supports data portability and minimization under GDPR and similar laws.
Our BDI converter is built on NIST's open-source NBIS and BiomDI libraries, and its fingerprint conversion engine is open source on GitHub. You can try it on the biometric data conversion page: the same engine runs in your browser and converts a fingerprint image to an ISO or ANSI template without uploading anything. We are not a matcher vendor in your tender, so we have no interest in locking the converted data to anyone.
For national registers the conversion runs inside your data center or in an isolated environment, and no biometric data leaves it. We provide the software, scripts and engineers.
For smaller databases, encrypted batches are converted in our cloud and returned with a conversion report, including the records that could not be converted and why.
We recommend starting with an audit of a representative sample, usually a few thousand records from different years and enrollment sites. In a few weeks you know which share of the database converts cleanly, which records need re-extraction from images and which need re-enrollment. This gives you a realistic plan and a stronger position in negotiations with the new vendor.
